Challenges & Support For Your Child Who Has SMA

Over time, disabled children and young people experience a range of emotional ups-and-downs, as do any children growing up. In addition, they face extra stresses and while many find ways to manage, there can be significant challenges for maintaining their mental health and wellbeing throughout childhood and into adulthood.

For example, living with a disability can make it harder to form friendships and children can become anxious, frustrated or angry about the barriers that prevent them having an ordinary life. They may question ‘why me?’, find that hospital appointments and stays and lack of access to activities interferes with their ability to do the things they want to. Dealing with pain or struggling to do things independently may also impact on their well-being.
